At Littleham C of E Primary, we provide an ambitious, inclusive and engaging Early Years curriculum that enables all children to become confident, curious and independent learners. We focus on developing strong communication, language and vocabulary skills while nurturing children’s confidence, resilience and sense of belonging within our school community.
Our curriculum is built around high-quality interactions, purposeful play and meaningful learning experiences that support children’s development across all areas of learning. Through our ‘Book Hook’ approach, children develop oracy, vocabulary and a love of learning through shared texts and experiences. We aim for all children to make good progress from their starting points and transition confidently into Year 1.
Implementation
Our curriculum combines adult-led teaching with child-initiated learning, providing a balance of direct instruction, exploration and play. Learning is carefully sequenced in small steps using teaching for mastery approaches, retrieval practice and high-quality questioning to deepen understanding.
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We use high-quality texts and follow the DfE accredited Bug Club Phonics programme to develop early reading, fluency and comprehension skills. In mathematics, we follow White Rose Education to build strong number sense through practical and engaging learning experiences.
Our enabling indoor and outdoor environments promote curiosity, independence and sustained thinking. Staff use ongoing assessment and responsive teaching to ensure all children, including those with SEND, are supported and challenged appropriately.
Impact
Children leave EYFS with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for a successful transition into Key Stage 1. Through regular assessment, observation and pupil voice, we ensure children make strong progress from their starting points and develop as enthusiastic, capable learners across the curriculum.
